Healthy hot chocolate

This raw cacao and cinnamon hot chocolate is one of the healthiest hot chocolate you can have. Very low in calories and sugar, it is the best

One of the greatest challenges, when you are trying to follow a diet or a healthy eating regime, is dealing with sugar cravings. Whether your body is asking for a bit of comfort, some extra energy or simply responding to a stress-induced craving, it is important to take notice and try to respond to that signal in an intelligent way.

No need for deprivation

I am not someone who believes in deprivation. It’s human, the more you deny yourself something and the more you want it. So if I crave a treat, first I think about what could be the reasons for that and I ask myself some questions ( am I stressed, have I slept restfully enough, am I anxious, have I eaten enough ) and then if I still feel that urge, I try to limit the damage a give myself the least sugary treat that can still satisfy my craving.

Low in sugar

My first choice is always to go for my favorite pick me up chocolate drink, which is low in sugar, and rich in micro-nutrients and anti-oxidants. No dairy, no nuts, no gluten & no added sugar.

Better than coffee

This raw cocoa & cinnamon drink is chocolatey delicious, it helps re-hydrate you ( sometimes a “sweet craving” can be a sign of dehydration) and usually gives me that “energy kick” that I normally find in coffee, but without the usual side effect of it. Coffee usually gives me energy when I drink it, but then saps my energy away, and makes me more tired than ever.

Rich in Magnesium

Cocoa is also rich in magnesium, which is a mineral important for so many functions in the body, from energy production to bone health and carbohydrate metabolism. Magnesium can also help for some types of migraines and PMS syndrome.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp of raw cocoa powder
  • A dash of cinnamon
  • Few drops of organic maple syrup (optional)
  • Hot water

Method

Simply place the ingredients in a mug, cover with hot water from the kettle, and stir well.

This is a base version, but it is perfect for your everyday chocolate cravings and does not require any fresh ingredients, and it can be made with items that you can easily store in your kitchen cupboard. In the next few weeks, I will share more of my favorite healthy sweet treats and tips & tricks to be healthy on the go.
